Every year for as long as I can remember, my mother has asked my sister and me to come up with New Year’s evolutions.  Many people have heard of a New Year’s resolution but not an evolution.  The goal of an evolution is to have some deeper change within one’s self.  Webster’s Dictionary defines evolution as “the process of working out or developing”.  The idea behind my mother exchanging resolution for evolution is that she wants her children to grow and change and develop into more well-rounded individuals.  If you think of it, it’s actually very smart!  An evolution requires slow development from within the core of an individual.  It’s not something that can just be mindlessly thrown into ones routine every so often.  Many times when people try to incorporate a resolution, there is no core change.  With a resolution the battle is lost before it has really ever begun because there is no gradual growth, it is either doing the new commitment or not.  To me, it shouldn’t be so black and white.  Growth is many shades of grey, ebbing and flowing, signalizing change and development.

This year, the word that I have chosen to carry with me through 2022 is focus.  Focus is something that I struggle with in many aspects of my life.  I love to be doing all the things all at once but many times, I forget things or lose sight of what the task at hand actually is.  I want to focus more on individual work-related tasks.  I want to focus more on the relationships that are surrounding me.  I want to focus more on growing and developing into a woman that I am proud to be.  Focus is something that takes time to acquire.  I have experienced growth in that department since I was a child, all of us have.  I remember being a small child sitting in school daydreaming.. Or thinking of my next big adventure.. Or what snack I would be indulging in after school.  More and more, I have learned to channel my focus on the tasks at hand.  However, I want to see more focus in all aspects of my life.  For example, my closet.  I am the worst at buying something, wearing it once, and then never wearing it again.  Not only is this method not cost effective, it is also not environmentally conscious.  In 2022 I really want to limit my purchases to basics.  I want to see myself gravitating towards pieces that I will want to be wearing in 5 years.  I also want to be more focused on the quality of the pieces, ensuring that they have the capacity to withstand a good number of washings!

In 2020 and 2021 so much of our minds and thoughts were taken over by covid and wondering what the future holds.  I was so focused in on aspects of the world around me that I couldn’t control.  This year, I am taking my focus back into my own hands.  I am excited to see where this year leads me and can’t wait to focus in on the world that is flying around me.
