One of my gentleman friends asked if I would be able to put together some basics for men in the winter.  Naturally, I was thrilled at the notion of creating some basic and versatile looks for men in the winter months.  My goal in shopping for winter is to keep things fairly basic. The cold months are challenging because you have to layer so much, especially in Oklahoma where the weather fluctuates so much. So with that, I try to select neutral colors that can be paired with a majority of my closet so I can create a myriad of outfits without too much of a struggle.

Shirt/ Pants/ Coat/ Shoes

This first outfit is a bit lighter on the warmth scale. The shirt is a wool based shirt but that is the only base layer. I believe that ever man needs a relaxed, quilted coat. They very sophisticated but also very versatile and usable. Everything in your winter closet needs to serve a useful purpose. I love the look of a chino, comfortable yet elevated and I finished this outfit with a pair of waterproof leather boots.

Shirt/ Sweater/ Pants/ Coat/ Shoes

This set is a bit more elevated. I have paired very muted colors (black and white) with a pop of red for a little color. Generally, your shoes should coordinate with your pants to create a seamless line from your waist to your toes. This will make you look taller and slimmer, which who wouldn’t want that?! I think that loafers are a great option for this time of year if you pair them with some warm wool socks. They are easy to just slip on a go, unlike the rest of the layers that you will be shoveling onto your body.

Sweater/ Shirt/ Pants/ Coat/ Shoes

“What colors can I pair with navy” you may ask…. EVERY SINGLE NEUTRAL COLOR. Gray? Yes. Black? Some would say a fashion faux pas, I say striking. Brown? There is nothing cuter than a navy button up with khaki chinos. For this set I blended like colors (off-white, khaki, and brown with navy and gray) to create juxtaposition of colors, dark and light. This is a great way to create dimension.

Coat/ Shoes/ Pants/ Shirt/ Sweater

For this final outfit, I added a pop of green which is one of my favorite colors right now. I would layer the white shirt under the green sweater and add the boots to keep the your line long. This would be a great ensemble for the office.

Muted, neutral colors are the safest options for winter and have the potential to at least double, if not triple the number of outfit choices in your closet. I also find that it is best to invest in a small number of very well made, quality pieces that you will be able to wear for years to come rather than something trendy that is cheaply made. Find pieces that fit you and your style and run with it!
